Historic lift for public transport: thyssenkrupp realizes Australia’s biggest-ever purchase of elevators and escalators for Sydney Metro

  • thyssenkrupp Elevator equips six new Sydney metro stations with about 200 elevators and escalators
  • AU$87 million contract is largest one-off investment of elevators and escalators in Australian public transport system and enables mobility in a metropolis with over five million inhabitants
  • New solutions are energy saving, failure- and wear-protected

Delivering a world-class, fully-accessible metro railway for Sydney: That’s what New South Wales Government intended when signing an AU$87 million contract for about 70 elevators and 130 escalators from thyssenkrupp Elevator – the biggest purchase ever of elevators and escalators in Australian history. The elevators and escalators ensure comfortable access for all customers, especially for people in wheelchairs, parents with prams as well as those who are less able. In supplying the metro with about 200 units, thyssenkrupp Elevator aims to contribute to making urban mobility in Sydney more efficient, comfortable, and secure.

Sydney’s Metro is Australia’s first fully automated railway and the country’s biggest public transport project. Sydney Metro City & Southwest is the second stage of the project, extending from the end of Sydney Metro Northwest at Chatswood, under Sydney Harbour, through the city’s central business district and beyond. thyssenkrupp Elevator will design and install elevators and escalators for six new metro railway stations as well as providing direct access to Central Walk from the Central Station underground metro platforms. New escalators for the new underground Central Walk concourse to platforms 12 – 23 at Central Station are also part of the project.

All thyssenkrupp escalators will have energy-saving regenerative drives, which means the energy is delivered back into the grid when running downwards under load. To prevent loss of data in case of a supply power interruption, the escalators are equipped with UPS power supply for uninterrupted operation.

"We have the potential to transform the entire urban transportation industry in the long term, making it more efficient than ever before," says thyssenkrupp Elevator's global Chief Operating Officer Peter Walker, who grew up in Sydney. "This city will always be home to me, and I am particularly proud that Sydney Metro has chosen thyssenkrupp as a partner in such a critical infrastructure project.”

thyssenkrupp Elevator received the order in August 2018. Sydney Metro City & Southwest is due to open in 2024 with the ultimate capacity to run a metro train every two minutes each way through the centre of Sydney.

Mobility solutions in metro systems of fantastic cities all around the world have been upgraded by thyssenkrupp Elevator this year: In August, one of the most important construction projects of Changchun in China, the city’s metro line 2, came into service. With an overall length of 36.5 kilometres, the line is the east-west traffic backbone of the local metro. thyssenkrupp Elevator has supplied 14 customized elevators and 77 escalators to support the revitalization of this famous, old Chinese industrial base. In Amsterdam (The Netherlands), thyssenkrupp Elevator has just supplied 124 elevators and escalators for the city’s metro system - including the longest escalator of the entire country. And in Moscow, thyssenkrupp Elevator prepares to install some of the longest and fastest escalators it has ever produced.
