Renewal of high-rise buildings

Since the 1990s skyscrapers have enjoyed a constant boom. The trend towards tall buildings swept across Europe, too with the first wave of projects now coming full-cycle into the renovation and upgrade phase. With decades of experience in managing complicated high-rise projects and our strong German engineering capabilities, TK Elevator is your lifecycle partner in high-rise mobility.

We've got the products – and the know-how.

High-rise buildings are complex microverses with often tailor-made mobility solutions. But after two decades (or more) the initial concept is usually ready for an overhaul, and in most cases a performance boost as well. Whether you are seeking extended transport capabilities, new and innovative ways to cope with changing passenger flows or shift the building's usage towards a modern mixed-purpose – our holistic approach ensures that your next mobility concept fits your needs and is and future-proof.

TWIN – double-up on cabins!

Increasing transport capacity in an existing building is often a key requirement for modernizations and renewals. TK Elevator's one-of-a-kind TWIN offers the maximum there is to gain, by adding a second cabin that moves independently in the same shaft.

Up to 40% more passengers with the same shaft layout.

The TWIN® elevator system has two cabs travelling one above the other that operate independently in one shaft. An innovative solution for existing buildings with increased traffic requirements. It is ideal for buildings with common areas on multiple levels, such as hotels, offices, hospitals and educational institutions, and therefore a suitable approach when converting to mixed-use concepts.

Frequently asked questions about renew elevators

How much does a renewal of my elevator cost?

A renew elevator is essentially an installation of a completely new elevator system in the existing shaft. Therefore costs similar to a new installation can be expected. That said, not included in this estimation are architectural challenges like very small shafts, unusual cabin proportions, addition of new stops etc.

On the other hand, with a right-sized shaft, suitable door openings and good conditions for wiring (usage of existing routes), time and costs on the installation can be saved. Always keep one factor in mind, though: Before any installation of the renewal can commence, the old elevator first has to be de-commissioned.

When does a renewal of my elevator make sense?

There's really just one scenario where there's no way to keep a building in motion other than with the installation of a renew elevator: it's when modernization measures on the existing lift are no longer technically and economically feasible.

If your trusted elevator expert asserts both factors, then you have done everything right in the past! Most likely your unit has remained in operation for decades and received upgrades of major components gradually throughout the usage period. Your investments extended the product life cycle significantly and probably have saved you enough (e.g. on energy, breakdown and repair bills) to even balance the costs for the renewal.

What’s the better choice – update or renew?

The question to ask first is: What's the reason to "throw away" an elevator and install a new one in its place? If it's because the lift is 35+ years old and can't be upgraded any longer in a financially sensible manner to meet the desired standards, then it's probably time to restart the product life cycle with a renewal.

However, with most elevators in low-traffic residential and commercial buildings, there's seldomly the need to take them out after just 20 years or even less. A finetuned step-by-step modernization concept will extend the usage period for another two decades, and improve safety, ride comfort and the overall look-and-feel just as much as a new system. Plus: It requires less downtime for installation and you may be able to split the necessary investment into smaller upgrade packages.

Interested in a renew? Whether your current elevator is from TK Elevator or from another company (for example Kone, Otis, Schindler etc.). We are able to replace it in the existing shaft. Our experts will be happy to advise you on the best suited options.
