TK Elevator to equip metro stations in Swedish capital Stockholm with heavy-duty escalators

  • TK Elevator secures large order of a mid-double-digit million euros
  • The metro stations will be equipped with a total of 44 heavy-duty victoria escalators to meet the passengers’ mobility needs at several highly frequented stations
  • Project confirms TK Elevator’s superior product and service offering, as it already services approximately 500 elevators and escalators within Stockholm's metro system, thereby ensuring mobility at the majority of stations

Düsseldorf, July 22, 2021 – TK Elevator, a global urban mobility leader, have been awarded to replace 44 new heavy-duty victoria escalators for SL Metro Stockholm. The total order comprises a volume of a mid-double-digit million euros, making it one of the largest escalator infrastructure projects ever awarded in Sweden.

The metro system, also known as the "tunnelbana", is world famous for its unique exhibitions of paintings and sculptures and is therefore well known as the world's longest art gallery. For this reason alone, the approximately 110-kilometre-long metro system attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors every year, in addition to its nearly 1 million daily commuters.

To meet their considerable mobility needs, TK Elevator will modernize several centrally located stations with a total of 44 heavy-duty victoria escalators. The installation is expected to begin in 2022 and to last several years. As part of the agreement, TK Elevator will also provide the first ten years of maintenance service for the new escalators, in addition to the 500 elevator and escalator units that it already maintains within Stockholm’s metro.

Peter Walker, CEO of TK Elevator says: “We are happy to continue supporting Stockholm’s public transport system with our products and services, building on many years of successful partnership. Sweden is well known to promote sustainable mobility and public transport, and we are proud to know that such a quality-oriented customer as AB Storstockholms Lokaltrafik trusts in our products and services."

In 2018, Stockholm’s public transportation company Storstockholms Lokaltrafik AB signed an 8-year contract with TK Elevator to maintain 440 elevators and escalators at the capital’s metro stations. This contract was also one of the largest in Sweden at the time.

Stockholm’s metro has seen rising boardings over the last 10 years, increasing from about 307 million to more than 345 million annually. The city counts among the fastest growing cities in Europe. victoria escalators are specifically designed for transport applications with exceptionally heavy-duty load conditions and has proven the merits of its robust design at peak traffic times in metro and rail stations across the world, including at Beijing, Istanbul, Sydney, Moscow, Sao Paulo and Madrid, to name just a few.

With rises ranging from 4 to more than 26 meters, victoria escalators are designed to reduce impact on existing building structures to a minimum. The escalator moves with speeds between 0.65 and 0.75 meters per second and offers special dimensioning with more than 25% overcapacity for motors, and 30% for its frequency converters. These customizations further increase the unit’s lifetime beyond its average of 25 years. The escalators include several passenger safety features beyond the European standard, including a step sag and an auxiliary brake.
