High-Rise Elevators

The modern high-rise building would not be possible without the invention of the elevator. In a functional context, a tower’s elevator core is the building’s main artery. In terms of construction, it’s the spine. Elevator systems within a high-rise building have huge effects on the quality of life within the tower block, as they provide the main form of transportation. They also have a huge impact on the amount of rentable space.

To properly understand what a high-rise elevator is, you need to properly understand the building classification. The IBC provides a definition for high-rise in Chapter 2. A high-rise is defined as “a building with an occupied floor located more than 75 feet (22,680 mm) above the lowest level of fire department vehicle access.”

Elevators in buildings of this size play a crucial role. Because of this, elevators specifically made for High-Rise applications, such as TKE’s momentum , typically offer a faster, smoother, and quieter ride to minimize the impact of traveling such a great distance.

Additional travel considerations for high-rise buildings may lead a building architect or elevator consultant to leverage technologies that allow for two elevator cabs within one shaft. One example is TK Elevator’s TWIN elevator, which can maximize a building’s rentable square footage per floor while maintaining minimal loss due to the need for additional elevator shafts.
