The emergency exit of an elevator car is a hinged door that opens outwards. Its cover is securely attached with a chain no longer than 12 inches for all enclosed hoistways. Exceptions are made for partially enclosed hoistways. This exit guarantees safe evacuation of elevator passengers in the event of dire emergency.

The exit door or hatch can only be removed from outside the car and is required by law to be locked at all times. Emergency exits are required by ASME code to provide an unobstructed opening no less than 400 square inches. These exists can be accessed by emergency personnel such as technicians, fire fighters and inspectors.

ASME A17.1 Safety Code, section 2.14.1.5 explains the requirement for Top Emergency Exits and includes specific requirements for seismic and other special conditions. While most passengers will never notice the panel is there, it provides an extra layer of protection in the event of an emergency.
