Number of Openings

While one set of doors for an elevator is more common, some elevators have access points in both the front and the rear. They work together to alleviate heavy traffic by allowing passengers to exit from both sides of the car.

Elevators with two openings — often called double-sided elevators — can be great options for building owners for various reasons. You might see these elevators in a hotel or multi-use building where the elevator services both public and private entrances. For example, the first 5 floors could be public so only the front door is utilized, but the rear door can be opened using a card reader to allow access to private areas.

Once you have identified your building type, number of elevators, desired use for each destination floor and other variables, you will be able to determine if having more than one opening for your elevator is necessary.
